Buying direct from the airline vs through a travel agency: how to compare the real cost

Updated October 19, 2026

The headline price is only part of the cost. Whether you buy from the airline or an online travel agency (OTA) affects fees, how easy it is to change or cancel, and who you call when something goes wrong.

Compare the total, not the headline

  • Add service fees, payment fees, baggage and seat charges, and currency conversion costs.
  • Check whether the price includes the same fare rules (changes, refunds, bags) on both sides.

When something changes

If you buy through an agency, changes and refunds may have to go through the agency first, which can add delay and fees. Buying direct usually means a single point of contact, and airlines often handle disruptions more directly for their own customers. Some agencies offer their own guarantees or support, especially for itineraries that combine different airlines.

Loyalty and perks

  • Airline loyalty points and status benefits are usually easier to earn when you buy direct.
  • Agencies sometimes offer price matching, bundles or coupons that change the comparison.

A simple checklist

  • Open the airline's own site and an agency in separate windows and compare the final total.
  • Read the change and cancellation terms before you pay.
  • Keep your confirmation emails and note who to contact for changes.
  • For itineraries that mix airlines or use separate tickets, read the guide on self-transfer tickets first.

How SplitWing compares channels

SplitWing's airline-versus-agency section models the total cost across channels so you know where to look first. These are estimates. SplitWing does not sell tickets, and prices on the real sites will differ.
